At Spyrja, we believe the middle grades, 6, 7, and 8, are pivotal years in a child's development. It's during this time that the brain becomes a supercomputer. There are an equal number of changes going through your child's mind at this point as there were when he or she was an infant. That makes the middle grades formidable formative years.
Our middle graders' minds are blossoming at rapid rates, and it takes a special touch to keep up with their energy. That's why we've tailored their instruction to include as much hands-on and active learning opportunities as possible. required knowledge at this time is still very much in the concrete application stage, so math, science, language arts, and history can become visible.
We also recognize the reality that some topics just need careful curation and extra time. With a project-based approach, our teachers are able to give necessary time to individual students who may need extra support in academic areas.
Mastery learning is the name of the game here at Spyrja. We realize that some learners will move through a rigorous curriculum at a faster pace. Because of this model, we are able to progress through the curriculum at the pace of the learner, often times resulting in quicker advancement through the traditional grade levels. If, in the case we believe a child ready to pursue more rigorous work, we will schedule an appointment with you the parent to determine what would be best for the child. You have options!
Entry-level learning starts with understanding our gaps in knowledge and using our tools to deepen that knowledge in a number of ways. Our entry-level learners will be led through the scientific process mainly around how matter interacts with other matter, how to read and conduct a lab, their first novel units, practical math applications, world history: a primer, and handwriting and essay construction.
Our mid-level learners will have become acquainted with our processes, and are thus more capable of venturing out into their self-guided projects. They will be taken through the scientific method by designing their own biological and ecological science experiments, working on numeracy and geometry concepts, learning how to structure persuasive and argumentative essays, and deepen their knowledge of American history.
The upper-level knowledge is high school readiness. We are looking specifically for the ability to compose a persuasive and argumentative essay, pre-algebra skills, reading comprehension at age level, and adequate understanding of state and local government. Much of what our upper-level students will be working toward is their first capstone projects, wherein they are to apply their knowledge to new and unique problems.
Middle Grades and High School will share this time in order to create a more cohesive learning environment.
Your learner will receive an individualized group or solo problem he or she will solve through the week. This problem will include concepts that will need to be taught and applied in order for the problem to be solved. For instance, your learner may need to figure out how to build a scale model of a scene in a story he or she is reading. Your child will need to be able to comprehend literature, understand scaling and measuring using tools, apply art principles, and write confidently.
During this time before lunch, the teacher will spend individual time with your learner to ensure there are no gaps in understanding, and we'll take plenty of brain breaks.
Lunch is a community event. We'll play games, tell jokes, and work on personal projects.
We may take a trip down to Fischer Park for a nature walk and gather samples for water quality testing. Or, we may venture to the public library to learn how to scan books and use the checkout system. This is the time we may have special speakers in or record our podcasts. The afternoons are also perfect time for individual tutoring on certain concepts. We want to make sure we're providing ample opportunities for growth!
At 3:20, pick-up starts. We do offer several clubs, though, and they start at this time. The list is still being built based on student interest, so reach out to find out which clubs are being offered when.
Surely, there may be some work to do at home. Spyrja fully believes that time spent with the family is the most important thing, so homework is often completed at school. If homework does need to go home with the learner, it will be mainly review of skills and humanities aligned.
