At Spyrja, we believe the middle grades, 6, 7, and 8, are pivotal years in a child's development. It's during this time that the brain becomes a supercomputer. There are an equal number of changes going through your child's mind at this point as there were when he or she was an infant. That makes the middle grades formidable formative years.
Spyrja offers a 4 day program for middle grade learners. Our middle graders' minds are blossoming at rapid rates, and it takes a special touch to keep up with their energy. That's why we've tailored their instruction to include as much hands-on and active learning opportunities as possible. required knowledge at this time is still very much in the concrete application stage, so math, science, language arts, and history can become visible.
We also recognize the reality that some topics just need careful curation and extra time. With a project-based approach, our teachers are able to give necessary time to individual students who may need extra support in academic areas.
Mastery learning is the name of the game here at Spyrja. We realize that some learners will move through a rigorous curriculum at a faster pace. Because of this model, we are able to progress through the curriculum at the pace of the learner, often times resulting in quicker advancement through the traditional grade levels. If, in the case we believe a child ready to pursue more rigorous work, we will schedule an appointment with you the parent to determine what would be best for the child. You have options!

Entry-level learning starts with recognizing gaps in knowledge and using tools to deepen understanding in meaningful ways. At this stage, learners are introduced to the building blocks of academic exploration. They are guided through their science exploration and understanding, focusing on cycles in science and the world around them, delving into literary works, applying practical math concepts, discovering the foundations of world history, and strengthening their skills
in grammar and writing fundamentals.

As learners gain confidence in foundational skills, mid-level learners are ready to take greater ownership of their learning through self-guided projects. They expand their understanding by exploring the levels and connections that exist within scientific concepts, strengthening numeracy and fostering growth across the math strands, learning to craft persuasive and argumentative essays, and deepening their knowledge of local and state government.

With a solid foundation and growing independence, upper-level learners focus on preparing for the transition to high school. They refine their writing through revision and editing of essays, develop confidence in pre-algebra concepts, deepen reading comprehension at their individual level, explore scientific concepts and the patterns of change found in the natural world, and gain an overview of U.S. history, ensuring they enter high school with confidence in their learning.

Middle Grades and High School will share this time in order to create a more cohesive learning environment.
Middle grades and high school learners share this time to build a cohesive and supportive learning community. The day begins with a morning meeting, followed by a morning activity designed to engage both the mind and body. These activities range from logic puzzles and morning mysteries to mindful breathing, energizing movement, or reflective journaling—each one offering opportunities to stretch their thinking and strengthen self-awareness.
Following the morning session, students set their own schedule and choose the order of their studies. Throughout subject work, learners can be found in a variety of settings—working independently, collaborating in pairs or small groups, or meeting one-on-one with a teacher. They may be exploring new math concepts, researching historical periods, engineering creative structures, learning a second language, or refining their latest essay.
During campus breaks, students may be found collaborating with fellow musicians in the recording studio, playing games, chatting with friends, working on interest-based independent projects, or simply enjoying music. These moments of choice and connection allow learners to recharge, pursue personal interests, and build relationships that strengthen their sense of community.
Independent reading expands vocabulary and deepens understanding across all subjects. This dedicated time allows students to immerse themselves in their chosen novel or engage in a reading-related activity that supports comprehension, reflection, and a lifelong love of reading.
Lunch is a shared time for the entire campus to connect and recharge. Learners may bring lunch from home, have it delivered, or prepare something fresh on site. With access to microwaves, a toaster oven, and an air fryer, students have the freedom to make their meal their own. Those who love to cook often share their latest creations or favorite recipes with the group, turning lunchtime into a blend of community and creativity.
Art time is a reflection of each learner’s individual creativity and interests. Students may be found in the recording studio, working with clay, creating on canvas with a variety of mediums, exploring digital arts, developing their own games, expressing themselves through dance, or crafting original pieces in creative writing. To broaden their exposure to different art forms, an art teacher visits several times each quarter, and guest artists have led sessions on topics such as recycled art and 3D digital design. This time encourages exploration, expression, and the discovery of new creative passions.
Each day includes a dedicated tech-free break, giving learners the opportunity to disconnect from screens and reconnect with one another. During this time, students engage in conversation, play games, or simply enjoy a relaxed moment together. This daily pause encourages balance, mindfulness, and genuine connection within our learning community.
The day concludes with a time for reflection, giving learners the opportunity to think deeply about their work habits, personal goals, strengths, and areas for growth. This daily practice helps students develop self-awareness and take ownership of their learning journey, ending each day with purpose and intention.
At the end of the day, all learners participate in campus chores, fostering a strong work ethic, a sense of accomplishment, and an understanding of their role in maintaining and contributing to the well-being of our community. This shared responsibility helps students feel connected to the collective state of the campus and reinforces the value of teamwork and care for their environment.
Middle grades learners and part-time upper-grade students are dismissed at 3:20. From 3:20 to 4:20, the campus offers a variety of clubs, tailored to student interests. Full-time upper-grade students participate in these clubs as part of their day, while other learners may join on an a la carte basis. Clubs provide opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and pursuing personal passions beyond the academic schedule.
